ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITURE:

In Situ

Image by SPAO alum Jamie Kronick

In a single frame, a subject captured in an environment possesses wonderful storytelling qualities. The information-rich surroundings convey much about the subject - in unexpected ways.

This class explores the challenges and value of shooting on location. Students will explore how to work with their environment in order to capture a strong portrait.

Subjects include:

  • Exploring different approaches to the environmental portrait (editorial, documentary)

  • Creating a frame

  • Lighting a frame

  • Directing a subject
